About this property

Welcome to Yad Moss Ski Tow

Yad Moss Ski Tow is a modest ski resort and tourist attraction located on the B6277 road between Alston and Barnard Castle in the United Kingdom. It offers a unique snowboarding and skiing experience in England, characterised by natural snow and a challenging ski tow. The location provides scenic views across the Pennines towards Scotland and the Cheviots on clear days, appealing to those who appreciate rugged outdoor environments rather than manicured pistes.

The resort operates primarily through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, which adds to its authentic and community-driven atmosphere. Facilities include a wheelchair accessible entrance, restrooms, and a restaurant, accommodating a range of visitors including families with children. Although the ski tow is described as fast and demanding, perseverance rewards guests with access to varied terrain.

Visitors should be prepared for a no-frills setup that contrasts with conventional ski resorts. Parking is limited but vehicle access from the main road is straightforward. Reviewers note compost toilets and indoor seating areas as practical touches, reflecting the resort’s focus on functionality over luxury. Checking weather and road conditions before arrival is advisable due to occasional snow-related closures.

Yad Moss Ski Tow suits experienced skiers and snowboarders who enjoy a technical and grassroots experience, as well as visitors interested in supporting a volunteer-led endeavour. The resort’s rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 46 reviews highlights general guest satisfaction, with appreciation frequently expressed for the friendly volunteers and the natural setting.

Snowboarding in England is kind of special. First and foremost, it is run by a dedicated bunch of volunteers. Remember that before thinking about complaining about anything. Don't go expecting lesurely Pomas and pisted runs and you'll love it. Definitely not for beginners, the tow is savage, all reviews mention it, but you still get folk up there who can't ride it. The runs are anywhere and everywhere. Love it. Make sure you read all of the website before you go. Located on the road between Alston and Bernard Castle, it's a stunning location.

All the volunteers here are amazing! So friendly. We went 1st day of the season. Ace set up! Compost loos, indoor space to eat your packup. Short walk up the hill from carpark. Fierce tow but if you persevere you will get to the top!

There may be a better ski resort on the planet..... Nah, thinking about it, there isn't. One of the very few places you can ski in England on real snow. The crew who keep it running are fantastic.

What it lacks in parking it makes up for with a selection technical and fast runs. In the snow the Moors look like top of the world. Great friendly knowledgeable enthusiastic staff. Good access for vehicles on a main road. Solid well engineered tows. Check your route before travelling as roads can be closed by snow. Especially depending on direction of travel.

Love this place. When the planets align the skiing is fantastic. We were fortunate today with glorious blue skies and a reasonable covering of snow. Had clear views across the Pennines up to Scotland and the Cheviots. Bear in mind this is England so it’s even more ephemeral than Scotland. Also, it’s run by volunteers on is pretty tight budget. Hats off to them all, they do an amazing job.

We went for the cable Car and basket experience, and the views from the top are absolutely wonderful. Also the cafe is very welcoming. The hot chocolate was delicious.
